BRADING RESIDENTS – PLEASE HAVE YOUR SAY ABOUT THE  POSSIBLE CLOSURE OF BRADING SCHOOL
  ·

📢 The Isle of Wight school place planning statutory consultation process is now open!

Various factors have contributed to a drop in the birth rate, leading to fewer children attending primary school on the Island.
By September 2027, it’s forecast that unfilled school places will rise to 3,056. This can put schools at risk and impact the quality of education for Island children, as funding is based on pupil numbers.

🗣️ Following the report on of school place planning, and a vote at Cabinet on Thursday 12 December, the Isle of Wight Council has now launched the next stage of the statutory consultation process.
📋 Please follow the link below and let us know if you agree or disagree with the closure of the school in your area. There will also be a section for your thoughts/ feedback.

📅 The statutory consultation runs from Friday 3 January for four weeks and closes on Monday 3 February 2025.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 We want to hear from everyone in the community. Make sure your voice is heard!

Polystyrene collection
We would like to remind residents that we will collect excess polystyrene from households on general (black bin/black reusable sack) waste collection days from Monday 6th January 2025 until Friday 17th January 2025.
If you have extra polystyrene packaging that won’t fit in your black bin or sack, just place it within a clear or white plastic bag next to your black bin/black gull sack on your collection day.
It must be in a clear or white sack so that the collection crews can easily identify it. The clear bag must only hold polystyrene, or it won’t be collected. Any excess general waste or black sacks left to the side of your bin or gull sack will not be collected.
After 17th January, please remember that as polystyrene is not currently recyclable it must be placed in your black bin/black reusable sack or taken to Lynnbottom or Afton Marsh Household Waste Recycling Centre and placed in the general rubbish skip.
Cardboard waste
If you have lots of cardboard waste, please bundle up and place it separately to the side of your recycling bin/sack on your recycling week collection.
Batteries
  • Batteries must always be removed from electrical items before being collected.
  • Place your spent household batteries safely and separately in their own clear sandwich sized bag.
  • Leave the clear bag holding the batteries on top (not inside) of your general waste (black bin/black reusable sack) on your general waste collection week.
Batteries thrown into ordinary bins/sacks, household waste or with other recycling are dangerous.
Large batteries such as laptop/phone/power tool batteries and car batteries or items where the batteries cannot be removed should be taken to your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre.
Real Christmas tree collection
If you have an active Garden Waste Subscription, you can also dispose of real Christmas trees as part of the service.
The tree should be clear of all decorations and pots and can be left to the side of your garden bin on your collection day between Monday 6th January and Friday 17th January 2025.
Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRCs)
Lynnbottom and Afton Marsh Household Waste and Recycling Centres will be closed on Christmas DayOther than this, normal opening hours apply.
Book your visit in advance or choose a same day booking by visiting the Isle of Wight Council’s website or by calling (01983) 823777.

Zombie-style knives and machetes ban has come into effect

Zombie-style knives and machetes are now banned from today under new legislation brought in by the Government to strengthen existing knife crime laws and to take dangerous weapons off the streets.

Throughout the summer, designated police stations were made available for you to surrender these weapons safely and legally, and claim compensation if you were eligible to. Now this opportunity has come to an end with the ban in place from today.

It is one of multiple measures the Government is going to implement to tackle knife crime in our country. Further bans, tougher restrictions on online sales, and prevention methods to stop young people being drawn into crime are expected to be a part of those measures.

What is a zombie knife?

These are bladed weapons with:

  • a plain cutting edge
  • a sharp pointed end, and
  • a blade of over eight inches long

Which also has one or more of the following:

  • a serrated cutting edge over two inches long
  • more than one hole in the blade
  • spikes
  • more than two sharp points in the blade

What does the new law mean?

It is now illegal to own specific types of zombie knives and machetes. The law prohibits the possession, sale, manufacture, or transportation of these weapons.

Find out more here.

What could happen if I have one of these banned weapons?

Individuals found in possession of these prohibited weapons could face significant legal penalties, including imprisonment. The maximum sentence for possession of banned weapons is set to increase from six months to two years.

Tactical Lead for knife crime, Inspector Sarah Nicholson, said: “We must stop these dangerous knives ending up on our streets and in the hands of criminals. Officers will take robust and positive action towards anyone found in possession of any of these knives in order to protect our communities and keep them safe.”

In 2023, we permanently installed surrender bins so that they are accessible all year round for knives or weapons to be disposed of across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, but no compensation is being offered, you can find where these are here.

If you have any information about knife crime you can report it on our website or call 101. Always call 999 in an emergency.

You can report anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or visit the website here.
