A wonderful initiative. When we first moved to the island in November 2016 of course we came down at weekends to view properties. One Saturday I visited St. Mary-the-Virgin, Brading, as I had been doing my homework about the local churches too. I remember meeting Jonathan who was very warm and welcoming and gave me a lot of information. As I was leaving, he smiled and said he hoped that we would indeed move to the area and I would join the congregation. He added, with a wink: “Of course, if you want a decent Evensong you need to go to All Saints, Ryde!” Sadly, those days of long gone. The choir was disbanded over various iterations of incumbents and members have moved to different choirs around the island. Now we have the benefit of a wonderful new initiative offering full choral Evensong at St John the Baptist, Yaverland, every two months throughout the year. I attended the first one on Sunday February 23rd. Rev. Barry Downer lead the service with a wonderful choral performance arranged by Andrew Cooper, organist at St. John’s Yaverland. The choir was mainly from St. Blasius, Shanklin, and All Saints, Ryde, with Margaret Downer and our own organist, Les Snow.
Future dates are as follows:- Sun. April 20th (Easter Day) Sun.June 15th (Trinity Sunday) Sun. Aug.17th (9th Sunday after Trinity) Sun. Oct.19th (18th Sunday after Trinity) Sun. Dec21st (4th Sunday of Advent) All services start at 17.30 Evensong has always been one of my favourite services and it was wonderful to revisit the traditional language and the sung responses in such a magnificent and historic setting as St John’s. Do think seriously about attending some of these gems in the future.
